An Amazon Truck passes by Venegas Family Farms in Ontario on October 31, 2023. Semi-trucks like this constantly pass by the farm in street traffic. Owner, Adrian Venegas says he thinks his family will have one more season at the patch because the leased land their farm is currently located on is being sold for development. Ontario, once known for its dairy industry, is experiencing a major shift as its open farmland is being developed into warehouses. The Venegas family opened a pumpkin farm over a decade ago to subsidize some of their dairy farm losses due to the 2008 recession. The pumpkin patch has brought them closer to their community, as it is a type of farming that is direct to consumer, Venegas says. He also says that he attributes the region's shift from farming to warehousing to consumer demand, adding that people complain about the smell of livestock and need online shopping.
