Candice Youngblood poses for a portrait on a pedestrian bridge on February 24, 2023, which spans over the 71 freeway in Pomona that she used to cross on her commute to school. Today, Youngblood is an attorney and Skadden Fellow at Earthjustice, a nonprofit public interest environmental law organization. Youngblood grew up near four major freeways on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Her late father was a diesel truck driver. She said it wasn't until college that she identified the link between where she grew up and having asthma, realizing that high rates of asthma and other diseases in communities of color are linked to their disproportionate traffic pollution exposure. Identifying and understanding environmental racism motivated her to protect the right to breathe clean air. Youngblood is one of the attorneys litigating the Bloomington Business Park Specefic Plan lawsuit. Coming from a family of truck drivers, she is committed to developing "blue-green" (both blue collar and environmental) solutions in the transition to a clean energy economy.
