Into the void left by a health care system that doesn’t offer sufficient translation services and an economy that demands grueling labor from low-wage agricultural and meatpacking workers, Punjabi residents in California’s Central Valley have created an organization to help each other.

Inderjeet Singh Brar, 55, outside Sikh Institute Fresno, a temple - also called a gurdwara - where the Jakara Movement frequently hosts health fairs and workshops. Brar received help from the Jakara Movement’s community health worker program, and now brings his neighbors to meet with the health workers too.
